The Chennai-born player started his career with Pune FC, whom he joined as a professional in 2011. After a season-long loan spell at Pailan Arrows he returned to Pune FC as a regular starter. In the 2014 Durand Cup, he scored the side's first goal. Dhanpal made his debut for the India junior side during the AFC Under-22 Asian Cup Qualifiers. He made his first appearance for the senior team against Nepal in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Hero ISL 2017 will be his second season with the Super Machans.
