In a tightly contested first half, both teams cancelled each other out in the midfield. Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz kept the Marina Machans in the game, producing a brilliant save in the 18th minute to deny a sharp effort from Jorge Pereyra Diaz, keeping the scores level at the break.

The deadlock was finally broken shortly after the restart in fortunate circumstances for the home side. In the 49th minute, debutant Joni Kauko whipped a dangerous low cross into the box. In an attempt to clear the danger, veteran Chennaiyin defender Pritam Kotal [49'] inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, wrong-footing Nawaz.

Clifford Miranda's side pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, with debutant Iñigo Martín and young striker Irfan Yadwad coming close. However, crucial defensive clearances from Valpuia and a solid display from Phurba Lachenpa ensured Mumbai City held on for the opening night clean sheet.
